Since 1988 Limitless Potentials, Inc. Dr. Kathy has been providing counseling for individuals, families, couples, children, teens, groups, and older adults in Palm Beach & Martin Counties. Her unique approach integrating practices calming and stabilizing the mind and body is useful for diverse populations and age groups. Additionally, she is an author, conducts workshops, provides supervision for mental health and addiction professionals seeking licensure, and continuing education seminars. For 30 years in her private practice, her clinical work and research has focused on the diverse and special needs for all age groups impacted by the addictions, trauma, mood disorders, pain management, parenting, and relationships. In addition to the individual, group, family, and yoga classes for all age groups impacted by mood disorders, relationship problems, anger, and complex stress, Dr. Shafer integrates a unique blend of clinical and somatic therapies from her diverse training and experience as a licensed psychotherapist and certified yoga teacher.  For your convenience, here are some definitions of the issues addressed and techniques used at her office:


What is hoarding? 

Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of these items. Excessive accumulation of material things, regardless of actual value, occurs. Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets in unsanitary conditions because they can't care for them properly. Ranging from mild to severe, in some cases, hoarding may not have little impact on the quality of life, while in other cases it seriously affects functioning of the person hoarding and the family on a daily basis. People with hoarding disorder often don't see it as a problem, making treatment challenging. But intensive treatment can help people with hoarding disorder understand their compulsions and live safer, more enjoyable, less cluttered lives.


What is trauma? 

Emotional and physical trauma is the response to a distressing experience that can cause emotional shock, biological issues, and can have long lasting psychological effects.  Some examples of trauma and disturbing events that can disrupt healthy behaviors and create mood disturbance include:  any type of abuse, assault, rape, or neglect; witnessing or receiving verbal and/or physical violence, natural or man made disasters, excessive or cruel teasing (bullying); major or unresolved grief issues, feeling inferior or defective, having a life threatening illness, being in or witnessing a severe accident; or being on the receiving end of a significant betrayal of some sort.  Healing from trauma is accomplished when memories, beliefs, or events no longer triggers reactions or behaviors that interfere with daily functioning (work/school attendance, relationships).


What is addiction? 

Addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a dependence on a legal or illegal drug or medication. Keep in mind that alcohol and nicotine are legal substances, but are also considered drugs. When addicted, the person is not able to control the drug or alcohol use and you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes. Prescription medication addiction is using the drug for reasons other than it was prescribed, taking the drug or stopping without consulting the physician prescribing the medication, sharing or taking medication from others, and doctor shopping (to get more of the same medication).  Addiction can cause an intense craving for and obsession with the substance. Quitting or stopping the substance abuse without professional help is possible but could be dangerous depending on the substance abused and the medical history of the person abusing the substance. Most people find they can't do it on their own and support from others. All addictions (including hoarding, eating disorders, internet, porn, shopping) can cause serious, long-term consequences, including problems with physical and mental health, relationships, employment, and the law.  You may need help from a physician that specializes in addiction, family, friends, support groups or an organized treatment program (inpatient, intensive out patient, or private in home treatment) to overcome you’re the addiction and work on recovery.


What is Dissociative Identity Disorder? 

Most of us have experienced mild dissociation, which is like daydreaming or getting lost in the moment while working on a project. However, dissociative identity disorder is a severe form of dissociation, a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is thought to stem from trauma experienced by the person with the disorder. The dissociative aspect is thought to be a coping mechanism -- the person literally dissociates themselves from a situation or experience that's too violent, traumatic, or painful to assimilate with his conscious self. Like watching a movie of their life from a distance.  Often associated with addiction problems, persons with DID often have been given many diagnoses from professionals not trained in identifying DID.  Grounding skills, such as yoga and other body based therapies have been helpful for the client to learn how to self soothe and remain present, and actually occupy their body.

What is EMDR? 

Official definition:  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment modality that alleviates distress associated with traumatic memories.  Created and discovered by Dr. Francine Shapiro, when disturbing events occur, the memory seems to get locked in the nervous system with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, and feelings.  EMDR seems to unlock the nervous system and allows the brain to process the experience to a more adaptive resolution.  After EMDR treatments, distress to the targeted trauma is relieved and limiting/negative beliefs are reversed to generate healing and promote recovery.


What is Mental Imagery? 

Mental imagery, sometimes called visualization, is the language used by the mind to communicate with the body.  Simply put according to Dr. Gerald Epstein Founder and Director of The American Institute for Mental Imagery, mental imagery is the mind speaking to us in pictures. This ancient, self empowering, healing tool can be used on your own or with the help of a trained, clinical professional.  Different from hypnosis, instead of being placed into trance which can open you to the suggestion of others, mental imagery enlivens you and opens the doors to the inner expert that already exists inside of you, enabling you to become happy, healthy, and whole…on your own.  When you use mental imagery, you feel relaxed on the outside, yet more awake and alert on the inside.  You open the door to being more awake, in control, and with greater awareness.


What is Yoga and how is it used in therapy?  

Yoga as an exercise, meditation, or practice means many things to many people. In the past 20 years pioneers in the research of traumatic stress such as Bessel A. van der Kolk and Judith Herman have challenged the limitations of talk therapy for addressing the hyperarousal states of anxiety, intrusive thoughts and memories, nightmares, and the addictions.  The cutting edge of behavioral therapies today requires experts to develop integrative techniques that can address the unique needs of individuals seeking psychotherapy. The delivery of wholistic and somatic therapies (meditation, movement, breathing, repetition of a word/prayer/phrase, imagery) need to be continually examined and updated to compliment the psychosocial and developmental stages of the person seeking help.  Yoga practices, according to Amy Weintraub, on and off the mat direct the mind to empty of disturbing thoughts, and the body to relax from stress and reactivity. As tools for self care and inquiry, the combination of psychotherapy and yoga provides practices that over time increase self reliance, and personal power.
